Cruising Through the Golden Gates of These Incomparable Heights

Huge rock formations bathed in sunlight erupt from Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Are they ochre, amber, or rose? Once you reach Golden Gate,20 kilometers from Clarence, continue on the R712, immersing the driver in sandstone tapestries and lush fields. More than 200 species of birds fly over the land, while wild cats, wildebeests, zebras, and elanders roam the land. There are several ways to encounter them. The 28km long Ribbok hiking trail includes optional overnight accommodation and a natural pool. On the Echo Ravine Hike, you can climb under rocks and overhangs once frequented by the San people. Their paintings can still be found in the park. Under the guidance of a traditional healer, follow the Herbal Route to discover the medicinal properties of the plant that has been used for centuries. This intrinsic knowledge provides a unique perspective on the surrounding environment.

At the Basotho Cultural Village, locals welcome visitors into a corral designed to give visitors an insight into their lifestyle. Once the chief agrees, the guide will lead guests through the village, introducing them to well-known figures in the community. Kneel in front of the bone-throwing man and ask him to tell you fortunes, or play the traditional game of Morabaraba. There’s no better way to get to know a place than by interacting with locals.
