Departure: The 22-kilometer drive departs from the R44 road in the seaside village of Gordon’s Bay. Built by Italian prisoners of war in the 20s of the 30th century, the road provided freight companies with a barrier-free access to Rooi Els. Today, it is known for its undisturbed views of Falls Bay, Table Mountain, and parts of the Cape Peninsula.
To see: Clarence Drive is surrounded by the Hottentots Holland Mountains, where you can catch a glimpse of wildlife that makes its home in the cliffs and crevices. Stop at the Kogelberg Nature Reserve and admire its breathtaking views. Home to 1,880 plant species, the biosphere is considered the center of the Cape Flower Kingdom.
In the morning, mist hangs over Clarence Avenue, attracting explorers to discover the creatures that roam the icy coastline. As part of the famous whale route, you can see humpback whales and Heveside dolphins leaping over the horizon from June to December. Throughout the year, seal pups and African penguins play in the shoals.
Things to do: Stretch your legs by hiking in the Steenbras River Gorge. Despite being only two kilometers, the Crystal Pool Hiking Trail is not suitable for beginners. Book at Steenbras Nature Reserve and hike through the rocky landscape, stopping to cool off at one of several natural pools and waterfalls.
Less than 10 km from Cogle Bay Beach, it’s a paradise for surfers and swimmers. Here, foamy waves form a powerful coastal fault zone. Grab your surfboard and shoot through the sturdy barrels down the hill.
Take a break at the tide pools at the Sparks Bay Day Camp. No need to seriously walk or climb, the location is perfect for kids. Here, families can enjoy lunch at one of the barbecue spots with panoramic views of the bay.
Plenty of adventure is at your fingertips, don’t forget to slow down. Clarence Drive consists of 77 curves that encourage visitors to drive comfortably at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour. Each turn leads to a more dramatic scene than the last. Stop at one of several rest stops to immerse yourself in it.
