Find Peace in 400 Temples in Thailand’s Most Populous City

When people talk about the hustle and bustle of the city, Bangkok fits that description. It is Thailand’s most populous city, welcoming around 2200 million international visitors each year. While many people enjoy Bangkok’s hectic lifestyle, the city is also home to more than 400 temples that infuse this metropolis with spirituality.

Bangkok has the world’s largest three-meter-tall gold Buddha statue. Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon, located in Wat Traimit, is an example of hundreds of huge Buddha tributes. Wat Pho on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River is one such miracle. Here, a 46-meter-tall Buddha statue bathed in gold leaf poses and gently looks down on worshippers. Located across the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun is one of the most popular temples in Bangkok. The complex is decorated with an unusual material – thousands of broken porcelain plates.

Rivers and canals form an important part of Bangkok’s extensive market culture, and floating markets such as Damnoen Saduak offer the opportunity to experience authentic Thai cuisine outside the city. Hop aboard a paddle steamer and go down the river to shop for groceries, food, and even antiques. For another route through Bangkok, take the Chao Phraya River Clipper past the main attractions and head to the city center – the palace.

Once the residence of the king, the Grand Palace is now a venue for royal ceremonies and dignitaries. The complex dates back to 1782 and is decorated with gold and stained glass. The temple is widely regarded as one of the most revered figures. The Emerald Buddha is 66 cm tall and carved from semi-precious stones. It is believed that the statue protects the country and brings legitimacy to the king and is a symbol of Buddhism.

In an ever-changing city, look for spaces and times where mindfulness can be maintained. It’s easy to be drawn to the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, but the capital offers countless opportunities to reflect on its true beauty.
