Reaching the Spiral Heights of Cathedral Peak

When was the last time you felt in awe? South Africa has one of the most impressive mountains in the world. Drakensberg is a 1000 km long cliff with stunning ridges and valleys. Here, the cathedral peak spirals into a meeting point between heaven and earth.

Departure: From Durban City, the departure takes three hours. Meander, fly higher and farther from the sea. In Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, the cathedral ridge outlines the jagged skyline.

See also: Just a short drive from the Cathedral Peak Hotel, a staggering amount of mulberry rock art can still be seen in Didima Gorge. This cave and cantilevered strip holds thousands of painted images that epitomize South African rock art. Some of these precious works of art have been around for thousands of years and are made from natural powders and plants mixed with fat. Visit the Didima Rock Art Center and learn about the San people through exhibitions and guided tours.

See wildlife adapted to the mountains, from cheeky baboons to eland. These majestic bucks inspired the San and occupy a prominent place in their paintings. The flora of Cathedral Peak is very rich – ground orchids, lilies and mountain longans bloom every year, while yellow wood and bottle washing brushes yawn above them.

DO: Hike through dramatic terrain. From a 2-hour stroll to Doreen Falls or a guided hike up 3,000-meter-high Cathedral Peak, you’re sure to find a trail to suit your abilities.

Trout fishing on the Mlambonja River. March and April are the best months, when heavy rains and the breeding season fill the water with life. Some hostels offer fishing services free of charge to guests, but it is best to plan ahead as a permit may be required.

Let your heart beat and run along challenging trails that dot the land, such as the nearly 18-kilometre Cathedral Peak Trail, which is exhausting. But don’t just stare at your feet – remember to enjoy this huge landscape.

These mountains exude ancient silence. At Cathedral Peak, admire your moments in South African history.
